Why Climate Change Affects Us - 1346 Words

Brooke Strickland English 1001 December 1, 2014 Why Climate Change Affects Us The weather and climate change play a detrimental role in society’s health. A lot of people have argued back and forth about the affects that climate change has on society. Some people have thought it has affected us negatively while others thought differently. The spread of diseases increases with changes of temperature and other natural elements. For example higher temperatures increase cases of salmonella and other food-borne diseases. This happens all over the states. For instance, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates 26 million to 74 million foodborne diseases in Louisiana. Having known this, it is important for us to realize the affects climate change has on air-borne diseases. Water-borne illness’ is another issue that affects Louisiana. Climatic conditions strongly affect water-borne diseases and diseases transmitted through insects, snails or other cold-blooded animals. Heavy rainfall increases water level while increasing water-borne parasites. A few examples of those are Cryptosporidium and Giardia that are found mostly in drinking water. Cryptosporidium is currently affecting 2 percent of the population. These parasites can cause death. One of the most common contracted illnesses from a beach is gastroenteritis, which is an inflammation of the stomach, and intestines that can cause vomiting, headaches, and fever. Queen of the Library free essay sample

Thestubborn wheels on the dilapidated black cart squeaked disruptively against thesolemn stillness of the musty air. The soft thud of books being opened and thehiss of pages being turned permeated the silence, creating an odd, soothingserenity. This was my domain, my realm, my kingdom, for I was Queen of theLibrary. Well, maybe not, but ever since the first time I donned mynavy-blue vest and began working as a page, I felt a certain intrigue there thatmy friends failed to see. Led by my enthusiasm, three of them applied for jobs, worked a few months, and quit. People often made sympathetic remarks aboutworking at a boring library three days a week, and I would hide thesmile that tugged at the corners of my lips. Boring? My work was anythingbut. Amidst the softly falling dust and between the rows of tottering bookshelveslay a subtle magic, often unseen by rushed patrons frantically searching forbooks. As I shelved book after book, my eyes rancontemplatively over the spines of the ones I had read. My gaze settled onHemingways The Old Man and the Sea and I saw Santiagos tenacity in strugglingagainst the fish and sharks. I marveled at the determination of this humble manand wondered if I, too, would have the same inner strength, the same unwaveringdetermination, the same nobility of character. Memories of last summerwent through my mind, reminding me of a struggle in my microcosmic world, astruggle in which I was Santiago and physics was the impassive sea, themagnificent fish, a fierce shark. I had taken physics at Yale and watched theother high-school students drop the class until only I remained with 20university students. Overcoming obstacles and learning valuable lessons ondetermination, responsibility and maturity assured me that I, like Santiago, ultimately triumphed. My eyes caught a glimpse of The Grapes of Wrath,a book which had left me uneasy and meditative. My worries seemed to pale incomparison with the tribulations of the Joad family. How could I complain aboutmoving across the state and having to adjust when the Joads moved across thecountry only to be cheated and disillusioned? After all, I had thrived in my newhigh school, but the Joads had failed in their pursuit of the American Dream. When I learned about the Great Depression in history class, the Joads loomed infront of me, reminding me to appreciate all my opportunities. As Iwheeled my cart of books over the uneven carpeted floor, I passed the sciencesection. I saw books on Einsteins Theory of Relativity, black holes and quasarsthat I had enthusiastically thumbed through. My love of science, allied with mypassion for reading, beckoned me to sit and explore. Come sift throughour pages. You say you want to be a doctor? Read about Fleming, who inventedpenicillin, or Sabin, who invented the polio vaccine. We have so much to offeryou, the books silently implored. I quickly moved away before my hand couldgravitate toward those tempting pages. As I watched the swirling dustsettle back over the ancient books after being disturbed by my movements, I feltpast, present and future merge in the common medium of the library air. I musedover my past, reflected on my present life and speculated about my future as Iwarily watched a languid spider take refuge in an undisturbed corner. The soundsfrom outside entered this world in muffled, hushed tones. The air was saturatedwith magic.

The Marketing of Jamiroquai Essay Example

The Marketing of Jamiroquai Essay Sony Music International, whose head office is based in New York, comprises sixty different affiliate companies world-wide, one of which is Sony Music UK. Sony Music UK became a pure record company in 1965, with two of its main objectives being to discover and market UK artists, and to penetrate the UK market using international artists. The organization became increasingly popular and successful throughout the 1970s and 1980s and is now one of the most powerful record companies in the world, and generates more annual revenue than any of its competitors, as illustrated by the bar chart below However, despite its strength and success, Sony Music has recently suffered from a major decrease in turnover and profits, as illustrated in the graphs on the following page. This is the result of a drastic change in the singles market; the UK sales of singles have plummeted, with figures for singles sales currently being the lowest on record for the past 25 years. Unfortunately, this trend does not appear to be changing; singles sales in 2002 totaled less than  £100 million in the first time since 1994, down 13.7% on 2001. Jamiroquai In 1991, Sony Music decided to launch the sub-label Soho Square. Jamiroquai, a multi-cultural English band led by singer Jason Kay was formed a year later in 1992. They released a song called When You Gonna Learn? on the independent London-based label Acid Jazz which generated a lot of attention, and were immediately inundated with offers from numerous record companies. Soho Square offered Kay an eight-album contract for  £1.3 million in 1992, but were not interested in signing the rest of his band. Kay accepted, but decided to keep his original band and pay them himself. Since 1992, Jamiroquai has continued to be Soho Squares most important and profitable artist. The bands image is very strong; their name incorporates the words Jam (as in a musical jam session) and Iroquis, the name of an indigenous American-Indian tribe who value the environment highly, which reflects both the bands love of music and their concern for the environment. Jamiroquais debut album on Soho Square, Emergency on Planet Earth, released in 1993, went straight to number one, and made them the top-selling English band of that year. Since then, Jamiroquai have continued to be very successful, selling a total of 16 million albums worldwide, having a dozen Top 30 chart hits, and winning numerous awards. Although Jamiroquais importance to Sony Music as a whole is not great, Jamiroquai is Soho Squares most successful act, and is a high priority to the sub-label as the band has allowed Soho Square to achieve its objective of successfully breaking an unknown UK band. Also, the fact that Kay is signed to Sony Music for 8 albums, a figure much higher than the US average 4 album contract offered to other artists, it is clear that Sony Music has long-term aspirations for the band. One of Sony Musics main objectives for Jamiroquai is to exploit its past marketing experience to allow Jamiroquai to break and conquer the US market. Sony Music, as the largest record company in the industry, has a wide variety of tools and resources available, in particular its extensive network of contacts within the music media, which, if managed effectively, can help to meet this objective. Sony Musics Environment Sony Music recognises the importance of managing its micro-environment in order to ensure efficiency and success in its marketing campaigns, as well the importance of interacting with and adapting to its macro-environment in order to preserve its competitive advantage and remain ahead of its competitors. Sony Musics Micro-Environment The company The process of setting up a marketing campaign for the band is carried out by Sony Music as follows: Management will set objectives stating desired single and album sales and other strategies for Jamiroquai, and will communicate these to the rest of the company. It is then up to the marketing department to work with other departments, such as Research and Development, to assess how to attract its target audience. Suppliers The company is responsible for all of its own supplies; it is self-sufficient in that it owns its artist and produces its own CDs and other forms of media (e.g. LPs and DVDs). Marketing Intermediaries Sony Musics marketing intermediaries comprise the following: Resellers- The number of reseller mediums available to Sony Music have increased dramatically in the past decade, with CDs being sold at specialist music stores, online companies, supermarkets and music mega-stores such as HMV and Tower Records. Physical Distribution Firms- Instead of working with external firms, Sony Music UK has its own warehouse located in Aylesbury, where all CDs and other forms of media are stored and shipped, allowing the organisation to keep costs down. Marketing Services Agencies- Sony Music is able to reduce its marketing costs by arranging the vast majority of its marketing itself. In Sony Music, it is not only the Marketing Department that is responsible for marketing, but also the Press and Public Relations Departments, ensuring that publicity and advertising for all artists are maximised. Financial Intermediaries- Being a multi-billion pound organisation, Sony Music does not rely as heavily on financial intermediaries as other organizations, but its recent decline in profits could change this trend in the near future. Customers Sony Musics products are targeted to specific consumer markets, but although market research is carried out via Sony Music mailing lists, and a recently-launched Sony Student Website which aims to gain information from the student population, the market research aimed specifically at Jamiroquai fans is limited, with it being more focused on a range of Sony Music artists. Competition Sony Music faces fierce competition from others within the music industry, namely the other members of the Big Five: EMI, Universal, Warner Bros and BMG. With Sony Musics current profit and turnover dives, it is essential that the company remains aware of its competitors plans and marketing strategies. Sony Music tries to position Jamiroquai in its consumers minds as a band that transcends an array of music and racial boundaries, and sees this as its main source of competitive advantage. The organisation aims to maintain its success, like all other record companies, via its Artists and Repertoire Department which is constantly on the look-out for new talent and which also tries to persuade artists signed to other labels to sign to Sony Music. Publics The two publics that most affect Sony Music are: Media Publics- The media can have a negative effect on Jamiroquais album and single sales. Sony Music try to control this by setting up publicity stunts that they believe will help boost sales, and by maintaining good relationships with editors of publications and heads of music at radio stations, to ensure that Jamiroquai gets the best ratings, reviews and airplay possible. General Public- Sony Music understands the importance of keeping Jamiroquais image as consumer-friendly as possible, and does this by changing the bands image where necessary. For example, when trying to break Jamiroquai in the USA, Sony Music decided to change the lyrics on the bands Return of the Space Cowboy album to suit the American populations views on cannabis: Cheeba Cheeba (slang for cannabis) was changed to Freeba Freeba Gotta get high was changed to Gotta get sly Sony Musics Macro-Environment Economic Environment It is expected that by 2010, the Asian Tigers, India and China, will have a combined GDP of 28%, which is 10% higher than the predicted GDP of USA, and of Western Europe and Japan. These developing markets represent potential markets, as their standards of living, wealth and demand for technological goods are all on the increase. Demographic Environment The UK, like the majority of developed countries, has an ageing population; it is predicted that 38% of the population will be over 50 years old in 2031. This older generation will be likely to spend a significant percentage of their income on leisure activities (including music). It is therefore wise for Sony Music to investigate targeting this audience. Another trend is increasing European integration, leading to the creation of the Euro-consumer. Sony Music has the advantage of Jamiroquais multi-racial and multi-cultural band appealing to the diverse inhabitants of EU member states, and should maintain this image to attract more of these new Euro-consumers. Cultural Environment Celebrities and music groups have a considerable effect on peoples attitudes and appearance. Kays strong and unique image (he is famous for his flamboyant hats and his collection of fast cars) means that Jamiroquai is distinctive and easily-recognisable. However his numerous violent outbursts and bad behaviour have also caused him to be regarded negatively by many, as his behaviour goes against the moral beliefs and values of the general public (Reference: Page A1). Political and Natural Environment The growth of public interest groups have proven beneficial to Jamiroquai, as Kays much-publicised support for the environment has gained him many supporters. Jamiroquai recently performed a benefit concert for Friends of the Earth and played a short set near the Danish Embassy in protest at whale culling around the Faroe Islands. Technological Environment Technology has had a big impact on the music industry, its biggest threat to date being music-swapping software, as companies such as Napster have caused significant dents in Sony Musics profit margins because of the fact that their 51 million users do not want to buy music that they can obtain for free on the Internet. There have been ongoing legal battles between Sony Music and Napster, with a resolution yet to found. Fortunately, success was found by Sony Music with MP3.com: joining forces, the Big Five record companies (Sony Music, EMI, Universal, Warner Bros and BMG) deluged MP3.com with lawsuits charging the company with enabling Internet piracy, with the result being MP3.com paying Sony Music $20 million. Sony Music also introduced a revolutionary idea to try and combat music-swapping software: the production of non-copiable CDs which cannot be uploaded onto the Internet or burnt onto other CDs. This idea has been met with mixed reviews, as many consumers have turned against Sony Music for doing so. Also, it has been rumoured that Taiwanese companies are secretly developing hardware to read these CDs.

The representation of the history of American slavery in the themes of literary works of the African American literary tradition essayEssay Writing Service

The representation of the history of American slavery in the themes of literary works of the African American literary tradition essayEssay Writing Service The representation of the history of American slavery in the themes of literary works of the African American literary tradition essay The representation of the history of American slavery in the themes of literary works of the African American literary tradition essayIt is not a secret that literature reflects the history of national culture, placing emphasis on the various aspects of the development of human society. The study of the African American literary tradition has emerged and developed from the slave narrative genre. The most significant unifying themes, tropes, and motifs shared by literary works help to tell a story about the history of American slavery and the longstanding struggle against its legacies of racism and injustice. The two literary texts that will be discussed in this paper are Frederick Douglass’s Narrative (1845) and James Weldon Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912). Both literary works contribute to the overall understanding of the key reasons of the struggle against the legacies of racism and injustice in American society of the 19-th century through the the mes that reflect the history of American slavery. In Frederick Douglass’s Narrative (1845), there are many significant themes that reflect the author’s attitude toward the historical events aimed at the struggle against the legacies of racism and injustice. According to literary critics, â€Å"Frederick Douglass devoted his life and writings to the cause of black emancipation, enfranchisement, and equal rights†(Chander 101). Through his Narrative, the author made efforts aimed at fighting against racism, violence, oppression, exploitation and slavery. The full name of the literary work is Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845). Actually, this work is considered to be â€Å"an American fugitive slave classic† literary work that tells a story of a slave from the author’s own point of view. The major themes discussed by Frederick Douglass in his Narrative are the theme of horrors of slavery and the theme of the impact of slavery on both the slave and the slaveholder. According to Douglass, â€Å"killing a slave or any colored person, in Talbot County, Maryland, is not treated as a crime either by the courts or the community†(102). The author provides many examples that demonstrate violence and oppression of slaveholders toward their slaves. He tells the story of Thomas Lanman, who killed two slaves, the story of Colonel Lloyds’s brutality, and many other cases that show oppression and violence, inequality and injustice presented in different forms. The story of Sophia Auld shows the impact of slavery of the slave owner.Besides, the author shows how slavery may have negative impact on the family, destroying individual personalities. Frederick Douglass himself never knew his father and his mother. He writes, â€Å"I do not recollect of ever seeing my mother by the light of the day† (48). The songs of the slaves made the author think about social and racial inequalities and seek th e proper ways to fight against slavery. He writes, â€Å"They breathed the prayer and complaint of souls boiling over with the bitterest anguish† (57). In general, the themes revealed by Frederic Douglass in his Narrative make it an important political document, which tells a lot about the inequalities and injustices done to slaves, as well as represents a warning to the American nation that â€Å"there will be a general uprising of slaves if slavery is not soon abolished† (Chander 104).In James Weldon Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man (1912), there are also many important themes that make the reader realize the necessity to start the war against slavery. In this literary work, the author explores in fictional form some aspects of African American identity or sense of self. The major themes include the theme of protest, the theme of color-line or race discrimination and the theme of African American identity. According to Mar Gallego and Marà a del Mar Gallego Durn, James Weldon Johnson â€Å"anticipates many of the central themes and motifs that concern Harlem intellectuals, mainly the reinterpretation of the key concepts of race and identity through a revision and updating of autobiographical legacies† (45). The literary work is focused on the established African American literary tradition, incorporating both the slave narrative tendency and the new exploitation of the so-called â€Å"tragic mulatto† images reflected in the author’s main character who â€Å"becomes the passing character par excellence† (Gallego Del Mar Gallego Durn 46).The author portrays racism that makes the lives of African American people unbearable.   Johnson tells about his first experience of racial discrimination, when he was taking the train to Atlanta University. One of the major themes revealed by Johnson in his literary work is the theme of lynching that reflects violence and oppression in American society. Actuall y, the narrator had personal experiences that could give him many reasons to become white, but in the famous closing paragraphs he doubts of the struggle for justice in America. He says, â€Å"I cannot repress the thought that I have chosen the lesser part [personal comfort, private happiness], that I have sold my birthright for a mess of pottage† (Johnson 93). The theme of lynching shows not only the negative effects and aggressive character of southern white supremacy, but also it demonstrates the importance of transformation of the nation’s life and identity. The author recalls the theme of racial violence that helps to assess the nature of the social world. According to literary critics,Under these conditions lynching’s popularity and persistence, its mass appeal stems from its power to specify not where life and death begin and end, but how the â€Å"realm† of the real could be extended without limit or concern for the people, communities and life wo rlds it consumed in its wake (Goldsby 170).In general, James Weldon Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man is concerned with the issue of racial passing and the importance of racial identity. This literary work can be regarded as a Modernist fiction as the main character’s identity, the identity of an ex-colored man, is â€Å"forced upon him through a scene of mob violence, or lynching† (West 43).   James Weldon Johnson has contributed to the overall understanding of the negative effects of racial inequality and injustice. Conclusion   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Thus, it is necessary to conclude that the themes revealed by Frederick Douglass in his Narrative and by James Weldon Johnson’s Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man tell a story about the history of American slavery and the longstanding struggle against its legacies of racism and injustice in American society. Both literary works are autobiographies and can be viewed as signif icant historic and political documents that serve as effective tools to warn the nation of the massive uprising of slaves aimed at abolishing slavery. Both autobiographies reflect the movement of the main characters from slavery to freedom. The reader has an opportunity to evaluate the richness of African American culture and the important role of African American identity.

Grade Point Average (GPA) and Graduate School Admission

Grade Point Average (GPA) and Graduate School Admission Your GPA or grade point average is important to admissions committees, not because it signifies your intelligence, but because it is a long-term indicator of how well you perform your job as a student. Grades reflect your motivation and your ability to do consistently good or bad work. Generally, most masters programs require minimum GPAs of 3.0 or 3.3, and most doctoral programs require minimum GPAs of 3.3 or 3.5. Usually, this minimum is necessary, but not sufficient, for admission. That is, your GPA can keep the door from shutting in your face but many other factors come to play in getting accepted to graduate school and your GPA  usually wont guarantee admission, no matter how good it is.   Course Quality Can Trump Your Grade Not all grades are the same, though. Admissions committees study the courses taken: a B in Advanced Statistics is worth more than an A in Introduction to Pottery. In other words, they consider the context of the GPA: Where was it obtained and of what courses is it comprised? In many cases, its better to have a lower GPA composed of solid challenging courses than a high GPA based on easy courses like Basket Weaving for Beginners and the like. Admissions committees study your transcript and examine your overall GPA as well as the GPA for the courses relevant to the programs to which youre applying (e.g., GPA in science and math courses for applicants to medical school and graduate programs  in the sciences). Ensure that youre taking the right courses for the graduate program to which you plan to apply. Why Turn to Standardized Exams? Admissions committees also understand that applicants grade point averages often cant be meaningfully compared. Grades can differ among universities: an A at one university may be a B at another. Also, grades differ among professors in the same university. Because grade point averages are not standardized, its hard to compare applicants GPAs. Therefore admissions committees turn to standardized exams, like the GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and GMAT, to make comparisons among applicants from different universities. Therefore if you have a low GPA, it is essential that you try your best on these tests. What If I Have a Low GPA? If it is early in your academic career (for example you are in your sophomore year or beginning your junior year) you have time to boost your GPA. Remember that the more credits you have taken, the harder it is to raise your GPA, so try to catch a spiraling GPA before it does much damage. Heres what you can do before it’s too late. Try your best. (This is a given.)Take high-quality courses. Sure, its easy to raise your GPA with introductory courses and so-called easy As but admissions committees will see through those tactics. A lower GPA composed of high-quality courses will do you more good than a high GPA composed of easy courses.Take more classes. Dont just take the minimum number of courses needed to graduate. Instead, take more courses so that you have more opportunities to raise your GPA.Take summer courses. Summer classes are intense but they permit you to focus entirely on one (or two) classes, which means that youre likely to do well.Consider delaying graduation. Spend an extra semester or more in school to take courses to raise your GPA.After graduation, take a few graduate courses or challenging undergraduate courses to show your aptitude. Point to your performance in these classes as an indicator of your capacity for graduate work.

History - Essay Example On the other hand, they too gained a lot from the revolution as well. This is actually due to the fact that they got an available opportunity to mix freely and get to know the other non-Jewish neighbors. The Jews also had an inner feeling of ultimate security due to the fact that they had tirelessly championed for the liberation of their country importantly, self with the entire unity of their Christian associates. Their major strength was bestowed in unity and most importantly, self confidence. These are the main features that they used in order to champion for their rights without false pretense and very much boldly (Mazur, 2012). The Jews majorly originated from virtually every country in Europe and the Middle East but most of them migrated from Eastern Europe and Germany. The major reason for migration from the Middle East, Europe, Eastern Europe and Germany was due to poverty, discriminations and massacres (Joseph, 1988). The first Jewish immigrants to Chicago came from the cent ral Europe and arrived in 1841. Most of the early Jewish settlers began as street peddlers and later opened stores that later developed into reknown companies such as Florsheim, Spiegel, Aldens, Mandel Brothers among others (Mazur, 2012). The civil war that occurred in America divided the Jews along various different lines (Mazur, 2012). It separated the Jews physically and ideologically, this is to say that there were Jews in the south of the country as well as the north of the country, others upheld slavery and human trafficking while the others rejected and fought against the vice. In the same manner, there were other Jews who worked hard to ensure that there was unity among the Jews whereas on the other hand others were struggling to ensure that the Jews were actively divided (Mazur, 2012). It is very much evident that the civil strife that occurred in America affected the Jews as well. Consequently, there are three characteristics of the struggle that had a different impact on the Jews specifically. To begin with, the civil strife led to an increase in panic and uncomfortability among the Jews. This later gave rise to increased racial and religious differences and biases in America. To make matters worse, the Jews both in the north and south of America, were made to bear the whole blame (Mazur, 2012) Secondly, the Jews were however adversely affected by the fact that the Jews in the North were denied the chance to have or to elect an army chaplain. Even though the task was not that easy, the Jews saw that they too had a say and hence wanted a representation on the same. According to the law that had been put in place and was functional at that moment, an army chaplain had to be, â€Å"a regularly ordained minister of some Christian denomination† this therefore made it very difficult for the Jews to qualify. The law however was seen to become that strenuous and even President Abraham Lincoln himself made an effort to re-strategize the clause in orde r to loosen its strenuous ends but his efforts did not bear instant fruits. Instead it took the Jews over one year of great job and hard work before the law was amended and passed successfully (Joseph, 1988). The Jews also suffered the consequences of the civil war through an operation that was far much against the Jewish officials. This is the final and the most

Housing Policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Housing Policy - Essay Example This ccontact count housing policy redresses nearly all facets of homelessness (Davis, 2010) For example, Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) in Buckinghamshire County is surrounded by hundred smaller villages like Buckingham, Haddenham, Winslow, Wendover and more, covering approximately 900 square kilometers. The Vale has approximately 69 258 households and a population of 174 100 people according to the 2011 Census (AVDC 2011). AVDC’s population and houses continue to increase in number. For instance, in the last ten years up to 8600 new houses have been built with 50% of the new builds from urban extensions According to the South Midlands Sub-Region study (2002) and the Milton Keynes Sub-Regional Strategy (2005). In addition, The Vale’s population is expected to go up to 213 000 by 2026 (AVDC Housing and Homelessness Strategy, 2008-2013). The contact housing policy was grounded on specific areas such as Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, and West midlands, Oxford, Devon and Newcastle. The specificity of the policy program was to help provide information on the level of homelessness in the mentioned areas and Identify the additional housing options and the help need to cater for the needs. Moreover, the contact housing policy also /had key areas such as, Housing Options prevention service, social justice strategy, social Impact Bond and Localism Act (Ambrose, 2008) There have been impediments to the sound execution of the cont housing policy from different quarters namely, The government, Mayor of London Local housing, Authorities, Chartered Institute of Housing, Health and wellbeing Boards, Hospitals such as St Mungo’s as well as the Ministerial Working Group which initiated the No Second Night Out model. How Do Old Refrigerators Affect the Ozone Layer Essay Example for Free

How Do Old Refrigerators Affect the Ozone Layer Essay The ozone layer prevents ultraviolet sunlight from reaching Earth. (The Ozone hole, 2012). Without the ozone layer, it would be more likely to get skin cancer, eye damage, harm wildlife, reduce crop yields, and change the ocean food chain. The ozone is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. Ground-level ozone is the main component of smog and is harmful to humans. Atmospheric ozone collects in the stratosphere, which is about nine to twenty-two miles above the surface of the Earth. It was discovered in 1985 that there was a hole in the ozone above Antarctica. CFC’s, were constantly eroding our ozone layer. (Roach, 2010). In old refrigerators, ammonia gas is used to keep the refrigerator cool. Pure ammonia gas is highly toxic to people and if a refrigerator containing it leaked, it would pose a threat. Switching to CFC’s was a â€Å"nontoxic† replacement that depleted the ozone layer. Then they switched to a more environmental friendly coolant. Although many refrigerators still use ammonia. (Brian; Elliot, 2006). Refrigerators need five major components to keep cool. The compressor compresses the ammonia gas and the compressed gas heats up as it’s pressurized. The coils on the back of the refrigerator let the hot ammonia gas disperse its heat and the gas condenses into liquid at high pressure. The high pressure ammonia liquid flows through the expansion valve. One side of the valve has high pressure ammonia liquid and the opposite side is a low pressure area because the compressor sucks gas out of that side. The liquid ammonia immediately boils and vaporizes with the temperature dropping to -27 degrees Fahrenheit which makes the inside of the fridge cold. The compressor sucks up the ammonia gas and the cycle repeats. (Brian; Elliot, 2006)The coolant is trapped inside coils and makes a circuit through them and changes back and forth from a liquid to a gas. Ammonia gas does not affect the Ozone layer but it is highly toxic to humans. When they switched to CFC’s, that’s when the refrigerators added to the list of things depleting the Ozone Layer. Du Pont discovered this replacement in the 1930’s. They are used in a variety of industrial, commercial, and household applications. The CFC’s were released into the atmosphere and went up into the stratosphere. In the 1970’s, it was discovered that the CFC’s in use are harmful to the Ozone Layer. The ultraviolet radiation at the atmospheric altitude breaks down CFCs, freeing the chlorine. Under the proper conditions, this chlorine has the potential to destroy large amounts of ozone. As of the 1990’s, they put a more environmental friendly coolant in refrigerators.

The Great Gatsby: Morality And Gatsby :: essays research papers fc

The Great Gatsby: Morality and Gatsby Morality is a very controversial issue. That is one of the reasons what people are interested in reading about it. Morality can lead to many questions essentially it can lead to the question between right and wrong. In The Great Gatsby Nick Carraway is faced with a constant struggle between right and wrong. Truth is an issue of morality. "It all happened in a minute but it seemed to me that she wanted to speak to us, thought we were somebody she knew." (Fitzgerald 151) Daisy and Gatsby tried to hide the fact that they hit and killed Myrtle Wilson while driving home from New York. Nick Carraway, however, knew the truth and had to decide if he was going to help hide the truth or let Daisy and Gatsby suffer the consequences. â€Å"I don't think that anybody saw us but of course I can't be sure.† (Fitzgerald 151). Gatsby felt that he could hide the car and with it he could hide the truth. The truth is that Myrtle Wilson was killed and Daisy and Gatsby are the ones to blame. They cannot hide that truth. The friendship between Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway is a questionable one and full of doubt. "He had seen me several times and had intended to call on me long before but a peculiar combination of circumstances had prevented it- signed Jay Gatsby." (Fitzgerald 45-46) The two had lived next door to each other for awhile however, they had never associated. Therefore, along with the invitation to the party there was some suspicion. Jay Gatsby is a very wealthy man. Nick Carraway, although he lives in West Egg, is not wealthy nor elegant. The two are certainly opposites. Gatsby and Carraway are bound to take

East Is East Movie Review

This movie tells us the story of a Pakistani migrant who experiments troubles finding a compromise between his integration and keeping his roots. Indeed, we understand his will to impose his family a strict Pakistani culture at the very beginning of the movie, when he pushes his eldest son in an arranged marriage. His family is obviously reluctant to his conservative vision, which leads the whole family to stand up against the father when he tries to organize arranged marriages for two of his other sons.Hence, we are being presented successively two different facets of this character. On the one hand, a narrow-minded and over-conservative person, which makes him a brutal husband (the climax of this movie might be when he beats his wife, which marks a real turning point for the relations among the family) and an oppressive father. The realisator managed to create a complex character around who the movie is articulated. As a matter of fact, his presence is tangible throughout the movie , even among the scenes which are shot through the children's point of view. With hindsight, this movie is about a man torn between his desire of integration (we might note his pride when he talks about his owning a business) and the fear of losing his roots. We eventually feel that he just wishes the best for his family, which is why he imposes his vision of life. Though, we might see a part of egoism in his acts, as the strict way he is raising his kids is also a way for him to compensate the distance with his own country .The numerous points of view proposed give texture to this movie, and animates the underlying issues; it comes to say the cultural and generational clash. Even though the subject is quite serious and sad, the realisator succeeded in making this movie lively, and rather optimistic. Many scenes are very dramatic and include a lot of humour. Furthermore, it offers a progressive outlook through the  « happy ending  » and the evolution of points of view from one ge neration to an other (Ernest's tolerance Vs it's grand-father's intolerance). Finally, we might also think of the scene when Sajid gets his hood ripped off to represent the father's openness to his family's expectations. Indeed, in a previous scene shot from Sajid's point of view, the hood gives a very narrow and vaginal-shaped view angle. Therefore, this scene might be applied to his father, the loss of the hood symbolising both the loss of his blinkers and the cut of his umbilical cordon. Thus, it suggests the birth of a brand new man and the entrance in a new era for his family.

Limitatio n of the study: Every work when started that to face some limitations. So in our research we face some problem. Our main limitation is time. Because we do not enough time for make this project but we tried our label best to make this report is a good one. Our second limitation was our different class schedule that why it was creating some problem when we making the survey. Our third limitation was financial fund because we are student. Significance of the study: Our research is based on the satisfaction of banglalink customers. We think from our research banglalink company will get more benefits. From our research banglalink customers relationship management can get some information about their customer’s satisfaction. In sort they can know from our research how they provide their services for their customers and how the customers react their services. So when banglalink management observes our customers satisfaction research result based on this result they can take their decision. Scope of Research: Research type: This research is a type of descriptive study which defines the relationship between the customer satisfaction and the banglalink management. Here the customer’s satisfaction is about the measurement of the wants of banglalink customers. On the other hand, banglalink customers are the population of our project as well the respondent. Those customers who are using the banglalink sim card and use their given services. Sample: Here the sample means the customers of banglalink those who are using the banglalik sim card and use their given services. Measurement: Basically we are come through a solution of our problem with Survey Questionnaire. And we make this Questionnaire to identify how much the customers of banglalink are satisfied. Statement of Problems: We have a solution of our problem by briefly discussed and we conducted a survey on the students group of AIUB. For that, we arrange a set of questionnaire and seeking some help from some loyal customers of banglalink. And those customers are basically ongoing users or once used Baglalink connection and also those customers who are use from their beginning. For example is that (Low/High) HO: Customers satisfaction would be greater than, less than their expectation Ha: Customers satisfaction would be less than, greater than their expectation Chapter -4 Research Methodology Methods of Research Used Difference types of research technique we are selecting descriptive research because we are finding customer satisfaction of Banglalink based on primary data. How many people are satisfied or not. Descriptive: Describes characteristics of a population or phenomenon, objects, organizations. Some understanding of the nature of the problem. Respondents & Sampling Procedures Population is any complete group of people, sales territories, stores . Sample subset of a large population we are select people among university student they are satisfy or not. There are three types of sample size we select formula for known and unknown population because firstly select BANGLALINK service users or not. Probability sampling we use to get our respondents. This process has to each element of population an equal chance to be selected . Known, nonzero probability for every element. Different categories sampling among these category we select simple random sampling. Simple random sampling: A sample procedure that ensures each element in the population will have an equal chance of being included in the sample. Research Instruments: Here different tools for questionnaire survey: †¢ Simple Attitude scale †¢ Category scale †¢ Likert scale †¢ Semantic scale †¢ Numerical scale †¢ Constant sum scale †¢ Stapel scale †¢ Graphical Rating scale †¢ Graphics rating scale stressing visual communication From these survey scales we used Five point Likert Scale for conducting our survey. We asked different questions based on BANGLALINK customer care service and collected answers through likert scale. Statistical Treatment of Data SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences): Based on SPSS we complete our statistical treatment. Descriptive analysis: Demographic information of respondents and estimate proportion among respondents. | | | | | | | | |Valid |52 | | |Missing |0 | Mean |1. 31 | | | | | | |N |Valid |52 | | |Missing |0 | |Variance |. 217 | Chapter-5 Presentation of data and discussion of results There are several tools available for data analysis. Like Excel, SPSS, AMOS, LISREL etc. For the collective data analysis we have used MS Excel & SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences). The respondents’ percentage based on gender: [pic] â€Å"Banglalink’s call rate is reasonable with compare to other operators†: pic] â€Å"Banglalink provides good services at their customer care centers:† [pic] Banglalink’s network s ystem is very strong: [pic] Banglalink has huge opportunities to become market leader of Telecommunication Industry: [pic] Chapter-6 Summary, Conclusion & Recommendation Summary of the findings: Banglalink is one of the largest telecom companies in Bangladesh. After commencing their operation in Bangladesh, Banglalink captured a large number of customers. So, other mobile operators’ customers switched the brand. But now from our research we are finding a complete different scenario. In person we are the customers of Banglalink. So, we conducted our research on our friends & the different students’ group of AIUB to get quick access to the information. Our research shows that for the last few years Banglalink’s performance is falling gradually & failing to meet the customer’s requirement. †¢ Most of our respondents have agreed that Banglalink’s call rate is not so high with compare to other operators. But there is also a larger group of respondents who didn’t comply with this statement. †¢ Banglalink’s offered packages are somewhat attractive according to our respondents. A major portion of respondents have agreed that Banglalink is good at promotional activities. †¢ Banglalink’s customer care services are satisfactory in the view of the respondents. †¢ Banglalink has developed its internet facility recently. So, the current customers are satisfied with new services. †¢ In terms of network s ystem there are different opinions among the respondents. In the cities & towns the network is good, but at villages or remote places this service is very bad. As our all respondents are from Dhaka city, the respondents are satisfied with the network service. Banglalink has somewhat contribution in social development regarding our respondent’s view. †¢ There are a few large telecom companies in our country. For the last few years GrameenPhone has been holding the market leader’s place. From our research we can see that Banglalink has no possibilities to become the market leader. Conclusion: In the country Banglalink has come with the mission of â€Å"Din Bodoler Pala†. At their market entrance they showed huge possibilities to become the market leader. They captured the most of their customers within their first two years of operation. But with times customers are leaving Banglalink. Recently a new operator has penetrated into the telecom industry. Besides the former operators are diversifying their packages & offerings. But Banglalink had failed to cope up these new changes in the industry. They also offered some new packages, but those are not sufficient to cope up the situation. To attract different group of customers, Banglalink should take different approaches to gain new customers. Recommendations: Banglalink is a large organization & they are skilled & well experienced to take any decision. Our research shows that dissatisfaction is generating among the customers of Banglalink. So, we have come up with some recommendations: Bibliography To prepare our report we took help from several internet based websites. We are cordially grateful to those internet site authorities & author who provides the information. †¢ www. google. com †¢ www. banglalinkgsm. com †¢ www. wikipedia. com A. The Common Application (Definition, Tips, and More)

The Common Application (Definition, Tips, and More) In the 2017-18 academic year, The Common Application is used for undergraduate admissions by nearly 700 colleges and universities. The Common Application is an electronic college application system that collects a wide range of information: personal data, educational data, standardized test scores, family information, academic honors, extracurricular activities, work experience, a personal essay, and criminal history. Financial aid information needs to be handled on the FAFSA. The Reasoning Behind the Common Application The Common Application had modest beginnings in the 1970s when a few colleges and universities decided to make the application process easier for applicants by allowing them to create one application, photocopy it, and then mail it to multiple schools. As the application process moved online, this basic idea of making the application process easier for students has remained. If you are applying to 10 schools, you will need to type in all of your personal information, test score data, family information, and even your application essay just once.   Other similar single-application options have emerged more recently, such as the Cappex Application and the Universal College Application, although these options are not as widely accepted yet.   The Reality of the Common Application The seeming ease of using one application to apply to multiple schools certainly sounds appealing if you are a college applicant. The reality, however, is that the Common Application isnt, in fact, common for all schools, especially the more selective member institutions. While, the Common Application will save you time entering all that personal information, test score data, and details of your extracurricular involvement, individual schools often want to get school-specific information from you. The Common Application has evolved to allow all member institutions to request supplemental essays and other materials from applicants. In the original ideal of the Common App, applicants would write just a single essay when applying to college. Today, if an applicant were to apply to all eight of the Ivy League schools, that student would need to write over thirty essays in addition to the common one in the main application. Moreover, applicants are now allowed to create more than one Comm on Application, so you can, in fact, send different applications to different schools. Like many businesses, the Common Application had to choose between its ideal of being common and its desire to be a widely used application. To achieve the latter, it had to bend to the whims of potential member colleges and universities, and this meant making the application customizable, an obvious move away from being common. What Types of Colleges Use the Common Application? Originally, only schools that evaluated applications holistically  were allowed to use the Common Application; that is, the original philosophy behind the Common Application was that students should be evaluated as whole individuals, not just as a collection of numerical data such as class rank, standardized test scores, and grades. Every member institution needed to take into consideration non-numerical information derived from things such as letters of recommendation,  an  application essay, and extracurricular activities. If a college based admission solely on GPA and test scores, they could not be a member of the Common Application. Today this is not the case. Here again, as the Common Application continues to try and grow its number of member institutions, it has abandoned those original ideals. More colleges and universities do not have holistic admissions than those that do (for the simple reason that a holistic admission process is much more labor intensive than a data-driven process). So in order to open the door to the majority of institutions in the country, the Common Application now allows schools that do not have holistic admissions to become members. This change quickly resulted in the membership of many public institutions that base admission  decisions largely on numerical criteria. Because the Common Application keeps shifting to be inclusive of a wide range of colleges and universities, the membership is quite diverse. It includes nearly all top colleges and top universities, but also some schools that are not selective at all. Both public and private institutions use the Common App, as do several historical black colleges and universities.    The Most Recent Common Application Starting in 2013 with CA4, the newest version of the Common Application, the paper version of the application has been phased out and all applications are now  submitted electronically through the Common Application website. The online application allows you to create different versions of the application for different schools, and the website will also keep track of the different application requirements for the different schools to which you are applying. The roll-out of the current version of the application was fraught with problems, but current applicants should have a relatively trouble-free application process. Many schools will ask for one or more  supplemental essays  to complement the essay you write on one of the seven personal essay options provided on the Common Application. Many colleges will also ask for a short answer essay on one of your extracurricular or work experiences. These supplements will be submitted through the Common Application website with the rest of your application. Issues Related to the Common Application The Common Application is most likely here to stay, and the benefits it provides applicants certainly outweigh the negatives. The application is, however, a bit of a challenge for many colleges. Because it is so easy to apply to multiple schools using the Common App, many colleges are finding that the number of applications they are receiving is going up, but the number of students they are matriculating is not. The Common Application makes it more challenging for colleges to predict the yield from their applicant pools, and as a result, many schools are forced to rely more heavily on waitlists. This uncertainly can come back to bite students who find themselves placed in waitlist limbo because colleges simply cant predict how many students will accept their offers of admission.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Quotations

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Quotations Johann Wolfgang von Goethe  (1749–1832) was a prolific German poet and writer. Within his body of work are many quotes (zitate, in German) that are now famous bits of wisdom passed down through the generations. A number of these have also influenced other popular musings and sage advice. Among Goethes best-known lines are those below. Many come from published books of the poets work while a few are from personal correspondence. Here, we will explore them in both their original German as well as the English translations. One of the Best-Known Goethe Quotes Man sieht nur das, was man weiß. English Translation:  You only see what you know. Goethe From"Die Wahlverwandtschaften" Die Wahlverwandtschaften (Elective Affinities) was Goethes third novel published in 1809. Glà ¼cklicherweise kann der Mensch nur einen gewissen Grad des Unglà ¼cks fassen; was darà ¼ber hinausgeht, vernichtet ihn oder lßt ihn gleichgà ¼ltig. English Translation: Fortunately, people can comprehend only a certain degree of misfortune; anything beyond that either destroys them or leaves them indifferent. Goethe From "Maximen und Reflexionen" Maximen und Reflexionen (Maxims and Reflections) is a collection of Goethes writings published posthumously in 1833. Body defense mechanisms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Body defense mechanisms - Essay Example Innate immune system does not have any specialized cells but uses other cells to identify threats like bacteria, react to infections, and provide means of clearing the infections from the body. The system however switches on other immune systems in an antigen presentation method. This function is carried out by special white blood cells. Innate body mechanism forms a physical and chemical barrier that protects the body (Janeway, Travers, Walport, & Shlomchik, 2001). In contrast, adaptive immune system is found in vertebrates only and comprises of highly specialized cells. Also known as the acquired immune system, the system prevents growth of pathogens through the use of systemic cells. Adaptive immune system acts as a memory system, reacting to a similar infection when incited. Adaptive system is acquired through various ways like immunization. As opposed to innate system whose reaction is in the germline, adaptive system is developed throughout life through reactions to specific infections that create pathogen-specific receptors. The system acquires it name; adaptive immune system, through its ability to enable the body to react to future similar infections. Adaptive immune system is enabled by genetic mutation which occurs in all cells of the body giving it more awareness and reactionary strength to fight infections (Janeway, Travers, Walport, & Shlomchik, 2001). Primary innate body defense mechanism include; inflammation, mucous clearance, physical and chemical barriers. Inflammation involves cutting blood supply to the infected area, walling off the pathogens, and forming fibrous tissue of the area among others. Mucous clearance provides coverage of the epithelial layer of the trachea. Physical barriers like the skins functions like barriers when they are not infected. When the skin is intact, it provides one of the best barriers to infections. Nose hairs filter out particles or any other substances that the body

PHILOSOPHY CLASS-LONG PAPER Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

PHILOSOPHY CLASS-LONG PAPER - Essay Example The dead can bear no responsibility for their actions. At best, Smith is a zombie, under the control of the scientist. An animated corpse is simply an instrument being used to fulfill the will of the master. Within this system, the scientist is fully alive. He feels pleasure by overcoming displeasures, which in this case would be technical difficulties with his zombie and his chip that prevent Smith from carrying out his master’s will. With every victory over Smith, the master (the scientist) stimulates his will to power and therefore is fully alive. The scientist follows all the rules of Master Morality, and is able to do this with a good conscience. Smith can’t subscribe to the Slave Morality because, ostensibly, he does not know he is being subjugated. He cannot see his master as evil, because he is unaware that his mind has been manipulated by an outside person. Therefore, he bears no responsibility for his actions while under the influence of the neural chip. Holba ch: Causal Determinism: All Events are Caused Holbach states that because we are parts of the greater whole, which is nature, we cannot think, perceive or act without nature influencing us. In order to be free of nature, we would have to be free of â€Å"physical sensibility† which means coma, or death. ... Smith does not, even though it does no obvious harm. As a result, Smith, while under control of the chip, has no â€Å"actual essence† (Holbach) and is not truly alive. Under this system, a person is punished or rewarded due to his acting or not acting on his motives, which we all carry within us. Smith’s volition to act or not act is compromised by the chip, so he should not be punished or rewarded for any actions. â€Å"To be free is to yield to the necessary motives he carries within himself† (Holbach, 113). Smith’s processing of what his motives are, and what to do or not do about them, is controlled by the scientist. It is my position that the scientist alone experiences Holbach’s limited freedom. Hume: On Knowing and the Liberty of Spontaneity Hume defines the will as â€Å"when we knowingly give rise to any new motion of our body, or a new perception of our mind† (57). If Smith’s thoughts are influenced by a neural chip, then Sm ith’s actions, which are directed by this chip, are not mindful actions, but compulsions that have been generated by the chip’s impulses. Smith acts unknowingly, therefore he has no will. Hume’s main argument states that â€Å"2. All mental events (thoughts, feelings, etc.) and actions are constantly conjoined with some other (preceding) type of event, and the mind passes from a consideration of one to a consideration of the other (class notes, italics mine). Smith’s mind is altered by the chip, thus altering the process of consideration from E to F. This makes for a false causal relation in terms of the will. If causation depends on a determination of the mind, then Smith’s mind is being determined by the scientist. There ends up being a

Advantages and disadvantages of the different economic types

Advantages and disadvantages of the different economic types What is economics? Economics is the study of the forces of supply and the demands allocate deficient resources. Economics is divided into microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics is something doing with the behavior of firms, consumers, and also about the role played by the government. Macroeconomics is more to inflation, industrial production, unemployment and the role played by the government. Microeconomics is the study about the behavior of small economics unit, for an example, individual consumers or households. Microeconomics is behavior of individual units. Microeconomics main concern is about the factors that affects an individual economics choice. Other than that, economics also can be said as branch of social science that can read the production distribution and the consumption of goods and service. Economics also include scarcity, choice, households, goods and productions as a definition. Economics system are studies of the method and institution where societies determine about the ownership, direction and allocation of economics. There are three types of economics system; Socialist system is a system that can be defined as a centrally planned or can be said as command economics. This system is fully controlled by the government. All the choice about resources are all made by the government. Capitalist system means free market economics. This system is like a freedom economy. This is because of the decisions made by the people. This system is mainly about the people in the country. Mixed economy Mixed economy is an economy based on the free enterprise principle. There is still some form of direct intervention and it is controlled by the government. Mixed economy can be said as a form of organization where both capitalist economy and socialist economy are found. In mixed economy there is the presence of private economic freedom with centralized planning and the common goal of avoiding the problems which comes because of capitalism and socialism. In the mixed economy system the main authorization of the economic activities are mainly by the governmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s regulation and the licensing policies. For an example, if someone wants to open a business, they must register and take license from the government for that particular business. So in this way, the government becomes a big power in the country. Mixed economy is also known as dual economy. In a mixed economy, the government runs things as post office, libraries, hospital and many more. Even when there is an industry which is not run by the business, still government get taxes and regulation like wage controls. Most of the people all over our country have no problem with the government take control of things like highway construction, birth certificate, national service economy may seem to be very easy as it is but there are some disadvantages in mixed economy also. The biggest disadvantage is between the public and private sector because they easily get blurred or sometimes shift one way or another from time to time mixed economy usually increase more government control and less individual freedom. This is why mixed economy is always in an evolutionary process. Mixed economy involve in two sectors which are public sector and private sector. Both of these sectors exists and function to achieve the national objectives. Both of these sectors is the one make the economic system in the country. Mixed economy is the combination of private enterprise with the government enterprise. There is also freedom of enterprise, private ownership and profit earning in this economy. This economy is used in most of the countries in the world. There are a lot of advantages in mixed economy, for instance, mixed economy help in increasing the national production in the country. In mixed economy, both the public and the private sectors work hard to bring out more good production. The entire problem which is created by the free enterprise and the public control are solved through the mixed economy. Mixed economy provides freedom of enterprise ownership and also the profit earning. There is also social welfare and political freedom in mixed economy. Other than that, all the national resources are utilized under the mixed economy. Most countries in the world have mixed economy. The mixture of two economic can imply a variety of difference for the country. Some of the differences are beneficial and some are neutral. Mixed economy can keep the workforces employed and provide a market for the raw material that they consume in the production. Additionally, mixed economy has the ability to ensure production of social goods. Disadvantages of mixed economy are that it is a half way house. Mixed economy is not very helpful in access optimal use of national resources. Other than that, mixed economy also suffers from disadvantage of both the capitalism and the socialism. Mixed economy is said seldom to achieve progress. Mixed economy also has unsuccessful regulations that may paralyze features of production. Mixed economy also has a problem such as lack of price control management that can cause shortage in goods and this can result in a recession. The disadvantage of a mixed economy really depends on how it is. For an example, if the mixed economy is more to the command economy, it is not too good also. Mixed economy also has many different characteristics. For a example, mixed economy, A might have high tax low regulation while mixed economy B might have mow tax high regulation. This shares a different set of disadvantage because set A gets more profits because of the high tax but as for B it will get lesser profit of the lower tax. Free enterprise system is an economic system where individuals can make their own economic decision. Because it is said free from government constraints. The advantage of free enterprise system is because there are no government restrictions and this makes more opportunities for the individuals. Therefore, in free enterprise system are more potential for private business. Individuals get more freedom and business opportunity because of the enterprise systems. There are more profit in free enterprise system and less competition and also there are more demands in the production and distribution of goods and services. As there is always a advantage, there is also disadvantage in free enterprise system. The disadvantages are lack of government control, for example, corruption and bribery. In free enterprise system this is the main problem, bribery. The control of that state goes to few hands and the economy move more towards monopoly system. Moreover, there are no reforms in the state an d there is also income gap that increases which paralyze the economy in a country. Central command system refers to a system which is organized by a government. Central command system usually determines how a countryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s resources should be exploited. Other than that, it also shows how goods and services should be produced and how it should be distributed. Most industrialized countries practices some form of government oversight. Central command system can be said as a true planned economics. Some of the central command system has permit transactions on a small scale but some larger industries are either managed directly. This is why mixed economy is said to have the combination if the free enterprise system and the central command system. The advantage of both the free enterprise system and the central command system is the combination of the mixed economy .In mixed economy, price mechanism plays a part. Price mechanism is allowed to operate but sometimes in some cases the price mechanism fails or can say that it fails to work against public interest. What is price mechanism? Price mechanism is system of interdependence between the supply of a good or service and the price. Price mechanism is basically about the price up when supply is below demand and price down when the supply exceeds demand. Price mechanism also stops supply when suppliers leave the price when the supplies when suppliers leave the market due to the low prices and increases the price there is more suppliers enter the market due to the high price. Price mechanism is also called price system. Price mechanism operates in a free market situation where their forces of petition and supply mechanism prices. Both the producers and the consumers base their specific production and the consumption plans on the current market price. When the consumers pay the price foe a commodity, they motivate the producer of that commodity. The entire price that is paid becomes a vote for more production. Prices are determined by the shortage and surpluses. Sometimes there is shortage of product. This is because of the price to rise, whereas the surplus causes the price to fall. The price is the one which determine how much of a product a producer decides to supply. When the product price is high, the profit also gets greater and more products profit motive. When the consumer needs more goods or product, the demands get higher and this makes shortage of product or goods and this also causes the price to rise. This makes the consumers to be discouraged but the producers are encouraged to supply more. The price of the good will continue o tries until the shortage problem is solved. When this problem comes, how does the government play a part? The government plays a part by fixing the prices above or below the free market equilibrium. They also put tax on the production or the sale of the carious goods. Other than that, they also subsidize the production or the sale of the various goods. Price control is the clear example where the government intervention disrupts the price mechanism. The government subsidy will artificially reduce the price and boost the demand of the goods and as foe the government tax, it increases the productà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s price to the consumer and decreases the demand also. This explains how government can help to sort out the problem of shortage of product and the raised up price. In a nutshell, mixed economy there is many advantages and also mixed economy helps to run a better country. Mixed economy makes a better economy in a country because of the give and take policy by the government and the people in the country. Economics should be stable as that the people in the country wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have any problems. Free enterprise system and central command system is the combination of the mixed economy. Both the system has a lot of advantages. Price mechanism must also be stable so that the mixed economy is stable. Price mechanism plays a big part because it can make havoc in the government and the consumers. Therefore, price mechanism works for mixed economy.

Human Influenced Climate Change :: Global Warming Essays

Arguments Against Climate Change These are some of the arguments used to prevent effective action on climate change. Climate change is not occurring This was the original argument used by the carbon industry to discredit climate change and global warming. Today the vast majority of world experts on climatic issues agree that it is changing, and that the evidence is there for everyone to witness. Climate change is good for us A more recent argument used by the carbon industry to confuse the issue of climate change and global warming with the intention of stopping effective action on climate change. Their approach falls into two categories: 1. CO2 fertilisation This concept relates to the fact that CO2 is sometimes a limiting growth factor for plants. The theory goes that with increases in atmospheric CO2 our agriculture will become much more productive. However, the storms, floods, fire and drought that are already playing havoc with agriculture are likely to have a significant negative impact, along with the longer term flooding of coastal areas. 2. Some parts of the world will be better to live in In theory some parts of the world might benefit, from a human point of view, due to global warming. However, at current rates of warming, local ecosystems will collapse and any objective measure of global benefits versus suffering would show much more suffering than benefits gained. Climate change is natural, therefore we should do nothing Climate change is natural and natural climate change is occurring constantly. However, natural climate change has been overtaken by human induced climate change which is causing the majority of climate change we are seeing today. Even if the climate change we are seeing today was totally natural, the disastrous impact is already being felt. It's unclear how much of today's climate change is caused by humans, therefore we don't really know if we should do anything Similar to the above argument and equally nonsensical. We can see and feel the impacts of our changing climate and we should do something about it regardless of the cause. The climate has been much hotter/colder in the past This argument suggests that because the climate has been more extreme in the past we shouldn't worry about it changing. It conveniently ignores the fact that if we reached either past climate extreme, much of our society and ecology would not survive. Climate change has been faster in the past Well it hasn't for the last 800,000 years. Ice core data shows that the fastest rate of CO2 increase over the last 800,000 years was 30 ppm in 1000 years.

Social Mobilization and Political development

Karl Wolfgang Deutsch is a professor of International Peace in Stanfield. Being a great Social Scientist, he was able to come up with an innovative concept on fundamental issues that discusses aspects of nationalism, political integration and political disintegration that occurs within and among many states which have been found to be applicable. He was able to link the concepts of evidence in theory that which are sought to be most preferably systematic and quantitative. In his concept of social mobilization, he defined it to be a process wherein people become deracinated from their ethnicity and turn out to be obtainable for innovative models of communication and behavior and he renowned quantitative pointers to consider it in most countries of the world. He was bale to show how such a process would become a precedent to uplift the probability of what he termed as political integration among the citizens who had been sharing one language, one tradition, and one basic concept of socia l institution whereas it speed up the factors that causes the disintegration of countries wherein citizens do not have the same characteristics. Thus his research and study in effect became enlightenment to the social influences that paved way to the decomposition of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia and also to the unification of the people of Germany in the history of the modern world. In his study, he was aloe able to establish the specific working conditions for political integration founded on his concept on the â€Å"security communities† which was greatly manifested in the North Atlantic countries. He identifies that the concepts in the political process that occurred in Europe and in the Atlantic as an integration that occurred through a series of conditional hypotheses which he attempted to examine through a quantitative proof having empirical evidences. In the article Deutsch argued that social mobilization is not merely a matter of having a series of changes that occur in a society among people. Rather, it should be understood to be a process that involves historical accounts and is related to economic developments wherein circumstances are clearly identified and are happening in a recurrent manner that are applicable in most countries which are found to be relevant in the field of politics. Therefore, Social Mobilization should be understood to be as a process that occurs to a large quantity of individuals in a society that goes through the process of modernization wherein there is an introduction of the concepts of innovative technology, practices that are non traditional, advanced practices, and changes in their economic life and that which these are deemed applicable and practicable in their lives that such shall be accepted. It should not be misconstrued to be in paralleled with the process of modernization as a whole.Social mobilization brings along with it the consequences where it deals with some periodic clusters history and tradition. Th ese consequences would therefore imply that such a process would definitely sacrifice such recurrent clusters where it would eventually bring conflict of interest socially of political interest in the process. This is the process involved in social mobilization where in there is a process of breaking down and erosion of the major clusters of the old social, economic, psychological commitments of the citizens making them ready for new models and patterns of behavior and socialization through the process of communication.Deutsch pictured such process to be a major step of any society aiming towards full development. He addressed such issues through the test using real situations of states and many countries. He was able to construe the concepts involved in these series of changes which now are made available to many states and countries a s a theoretical basis for social mobilization.Reference:Deutsch, K.W.
